The Caipirinha
Charles and Lily Furbish had traveled widely when they were young. Their favorite place to visit was Rio de Janeiro, where their favorite dance was the samba, and their favorite drink, the Caipirinha, the iconic Brazilian cocktail. Its recipe involved the simple muddling of lime and sugar, blended with cachaca, a spirit derived from sugarcane and unique to Brazil. This signature cocktail soon became a favorite to all the Furbish’s guests.
Here’s the recipe they followed:
-
Cut a lime into small wedges
-
Cover with several spoonfuls of sugar; I prefer turbinado sugar
-
Muddle (crushing the mix) until the limes have released their juice
-
Add an ounce of cachaca, and blend or shake well
-
Pour mix—including the limes—over crushed ice and enjoy!
